It was very hot last night..so I came back from meeting my tax consultant and took a bath before going to sleep. Today morning I woke up and had a sneezing fit..and another and kept having them for the next 2 hours.

There was panic in the house. What if its the dreaded swine flu.

I was supposed to drive down to bhubaneswar (bbsr) to meet a friend in the evening. Mom first said you can go only if you go to the Apollo hospital there and get vaccinated against swine flu. Some cousins who work in Apollo were called up and consulted. They gravely said if he already has a cold its too late; he can't get vaccinated, it will get worse.

This was becoming a big chicken- egg problem- I also sneezed once more in between. Some in-laws of my cousin sister, who is Professor of Medicine in SCB Medical College, Cuttack, Orissa's biggest hospital was called up. He said do not come to me- quickly take Azithral 500, Centrizine, and Otrivin nasal drops.

But what about diagnosis- there is only a mild sneezing and no fever.

Haven't you seen- six students of the law college in cuttack were diagnosed with swine flu yesterday: the day before an Executive Engineer of the PWD department, and the day before that a Block Development Officer have popped it (the two most corrupt departments in the government). There is no need of diagnosis, we know who can get it.

Or maybe his point was more subtle- the swines of this world and this flu go together- so beware.

Anyways so I am in bed, nursing a sneeze. There is food and any hot beverage (other than the likes of hot toddy) on demand; I did try asking for some cold lemonnnn...and was not allowed to complete the sentence. The AC and my plans of going BBSR are in, ahem, cold storage.

Morning:
I don't know how to capture where I am right now. In a ksrtc local bus to bijapur from hospet (hampi). The sun has not come out since morning; and it will rain, the wind is moist and heavy. We are stopping at every bus stop; we are overtaking everything in between every bus stop; audioslave has been playing on my pod. I am on the single front seat next to the driver; u could say riding shotgun again.

Dinner:
Keema balls masala + 5 chapatis.
Someone got sick of veg balls manchurian, and decided to make some non veg balls. Very exotic fusion cuisine. Need a cigarette.

Have any of you had a westron tv. This hotel room has one. It plays a slideshow of "hello" when you switch it on, and of "bye bye" when u switch it off. The things we trip on. Lol!

Amit agrawal and delhi cops

Some weeks back amit, samrat and me were at this bar called 4S in defence colony. Since amit was in the elation+depression state which comes with leaving a job, we were each down some 7-10 drinks down by the time we left. It did not help also that aju john, and some other randoms from rainmaker were also drinking in the same place and they had some really cute chicks. Samrat was driving the car, amit was riding shotgun and me in the back seat.

There was a nakabandi on the only entrance from def col. There was no way we were getting through an alcohol test.

1 am. It is new tactic for the constable; he has not met anyone who admits to being drunk and still wants to go. He looks back to his posse who don't give any indication.

Rohtang pass

I went to rohtang pass 2 weeks back. At 13,100 feet, it is one of the key routes on all indo-tibetan-ladhaki trading stops and is also the principal road connecting lahaul-spiti valleys and ladhakh with the rest of india (other than zojila pass, which is through the kashmir valley). Rohtang in tibetan, literally means mound of corpses, such were the number of travellers who died while trying to cross the pass.
So we (jagdeep and vp singh joined me here yesterday) got up at 4 am, and started off for it. After knowing such history, little were we prepared for the sight which would us..it was a full indian bazaar up there. You could get maggi to t shirts. There were proper car parks, and they were overflowing. There were studs from the punjab who ripped off their shirts and jackets to pose in front of the snow, and the minute the snap was taken, they would start huddling from the cold. U could even buy beer here.
But we are also veterans of the indian fairs (we call them jatras in oriya)- I started with trying to learn skiing in ten minutes. We took snowmobile rides- basically all the types of useless expenditures our parents forbade us from in our small town fairs, we went ahead and did it- afterall the money we have earned does seem very illgotten, our hard work does never seem to compare with real hard work.
After posing with 11 foot high snow boulders, and mimicing real explorers by trying to climb every small snow mound (and tripping and falling endlessly while doing so!), we finally had enough and settled down in the comfort of our car.
As the driver pulled downhill through the traffic maze, we would get a glimpse of why rohtang is rohtang..caught in the jam of butter chicken tourists, there were couple of mahindras and tatas, packed to gills with hardy people for whom the snow was no celebrity to be awed by, for whom the pass still was the only access to their homes.
For whom for 4 months every year this valley between the the pir panjal range allows through all essentials, their shampoos to their petrol. For 4 months, they become part of india through this pass.
Soon there will be a rohtang tunnel; it will be a 9km long Shelob's lair. The border roads organisation will no longer maintain the roads through the pass. Lahaul- Spiti will gain, and Manali will lose. After all will u get ur kid to manali if he can't go up to rohtang and be dazzled by the snow?
But there is some majesty to these mountains. So what if u build a tunnel through rohtang la; there is always the next high mountain pass beyond Baralaccha (about 17500 feet). Kids will come in their Pajeros from chandigarh, zip through rohtang tunnel, buy their beer bottles at Baralaccha and will probably stream their snowman poses in 3D live to the world then.
I will thrash mine, if he even thinks about doing it.

Take the boat ride around the harbour from Gateway of India around nine. Watch the Taj Mahal Palace and the gateway all lit up from the sea. If you are lucky then you get to see the only working air craft carrier in the Indian navy also in the harbour. A must do in bombay.

The snap below is that of Jama Masjid, Old Delhi. Arun Srikumar and myself were on a plan to eat at Karim's in Old Delhi. All i remembered from my last visit is that it is near Gate 2 of Jama Masjid. So off we went in the Metro to Chawri Bazar station. Walked to gate 7 of the Jama Masjid. There when we were askin a policeman as to how to reach Gate 2, he queitly pointed us up the Jama Masjid. Knowing that we would never ever again be able to muster up the courage to go inside, we ran inside.

There was another beautiful snap that could have been taken; that of the Red Fort from the Jama Masjid. Some other time, I guess.
